Five hours late doing Sundays three hour Contract?

IT has been a week since I published a Paper Boys Rant.

I Believe it is time for a Good Rant: # 10

I got up at 3:30 am just like I always do the six mornings a week. I have 215 Times Colonist Newspapers to deliver to homes in East Courtenay where I live on Vancouver Island in the Pacific Northwest.

This is the north end of the Island from Powell River ferry and North America looking at sun setting over the Island and the Pacific Ocean…

 

This was a strange day before we went to Bed, Ange noticed that the slow leak we had been taking about getting fixed when we rotated the winter tires off her car this Wednesday was FLAT  ^{Angela Drives a Red 1992 Pontiac Tempest} most mornings but I was planning to use her car because it gets 50% better mileage then my work Van and it had gas in it. Ange. had agreed to do Bianca’s Route and was using her 2013 Honda Civic to do the double route. I get up at 3;30 have Eat my first 10 grams of Immunocal in a tablespoon of Raspberry Yoghurt. Go out plug in the small air pump we have in each vehicle because when you visit 100-200 homes six to eight times each week you end up with a lot of flat tires, 23 in 2013…  Wow,    The guy at the tire shop loves us $20 every time we get a flat. I go back in the House and brew a single cup of Black coffee I plan to drink on the drive to the dock.

I drive to the Dock to get my Papers and what do I see but the head drivers is still there waiting for the Papers. Tom organizes the store bundles of news papers for the other drivers and normally calls when the papers are late turns out I should have checked my phone because at 3:50 about the time I had started the air Pump outside tom had call and left a message saying the papers would be lat try at 5 am. I get home Ange was up early and was already driving to the dock at 4 :02    I stop her tell her she can go back home, we wait an hour she heads out to the dock I go out and put the air pump connected fill the low tire go back in the house fill my second coffee of the morning get in the Tempest an start driving back to the Dock!

There Ange is stopped before the intersection with her window down in Bianca’s new car waiting to tell me the papers will not be ready till 8 am.

Fun Fun, Fun!!!

Get up a third time fill the flat tire, get my third coffee, drive to the Dock, Collect the Papers start the route 4 an half hours late. meet a couple of happy customer that thanked me for their papers. Every think was going well till the half way point I stopped at a house pulled in the drive run to the front door tossed the paper in the basket hooped on the garden stones to the neabours house that normally gets a paper too. the dogs that live their start to bark guy comes out what are you doing in my drive?

I answer, “Just retrieving a paper from your next door houses step, they are away.” 

He Says, “I don’t want you using my drive way someone has been driving on my lawn this winter.”

Sir, I don’t think I drove in your grass ever!

He says, “If you ever come into my driveway again I will cancel the paper…”

Enough Said, “I hope he likes his paper in his drive way instead of the Paper basket right beside his front door like I have been doing every morning since I started this route. “

A fourth customer stopped me a few doors later and restored my faith in my people, she thanked me for the Great Service she had been getting. Funny thing is I toss it in her front yard as I drive by it is one of my easiest stop.  It was noon when I finished the three and a half hour contract at 4 am on Sunday.

It is funny now i understand why the dogs where so unhappy. It is also a good thing he did not see me run across his grass through his garden on the stepping stones to the guy next doors place either, mind you I am not a jerk about it I don’t damage anyone’s yard to save a minutes walk.
